Does the thought of healthcare insurance for seniors make your brain get tangled up in knots? These handy tips on choosing Medicare supplement plans can help untangle the mystery of Medicare’s Advantage Program. Although fundamentally the same as the Medicare program operated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a branch of the US Department of Health and Human Services, details do vary. To qualify as an officially recognized Medicare supplement plan, services must meet or exceed those offered by the US government. Advantage plans typically offer a wider array of services than US-funded Medicare but the advantages come with a stiffer premium. Which is the better choice for you? Is dental or vision care important? Go with the supplemental plans. Medicare doesn’t offer these services. Want to go to any doctor anywhere? Medicare covers treatment at almost every medical facility in the US. Medicare Advantage plans restrict patient options to network-only providers. Need barbiturates, benzodiazepines, or cough suppressants? They’re covered in most Medicare supplement plans but not in Medicare itself. Want to exercise your way to health? Advantage programs often cover memberships to health clubs and gyms; Medicare does not. Want to minimize monthly expenses? Medicare enrollees pay monthly premiums to the government. Enrollees in supplemental programs pay Medicare but they also pay monthly premiums to the supplemental coverage carrier. Don’t like the hospital? Studies indicate the number of days per year the average Medicare Advantage patient spends in the hospital is less than the average Medicare-only recipient. Live in the city or the country? Medicare is available in doctor’s offices everywhere, in towns large and small, no matter how remote. For-profit enterprises, including healthcare insurance companies offering Medicare supplement plans, are usually clustered where lots of people are. Finding a Medicare Advantage provider nearby in the countryside may prove quite tricky. These tips on choosing Medicare supplement plans won’t answer every question but weighing the options point by point is a great way to weed through the clutter and find the best solution for the individual. Each option has its own advantages.
