I have had AARP MedicareRx Preferred for several years and was quite satisfied with their coverage, cost of drugs, and customer servive...until February 2015 when they let us know they had changed drug providers. OptumRx denied all exception requests from my mental health doctor. OptumRx's review board on exceptions does not know the state of my mental health. My fragile mental health is in the care of someone who knows me and has prescribed the necessary drugs to maintain a stable balance.

I was sorry to read the poor review about United Health Care. I think most insurance companies tend to be basically about the same. As someone who is on Soc Security disability and whose income is poor, I have been very thankful for UHC from the customer service attention and help over the phone to choice of drugs (for the most part) to the cost of the plan. I chose to go with UHC when Medicare went with Cigna as the default choice. I compared the two and decided to go with UHC after I read Cigna did not honor privacy like UHC did (at least in writing). I read the fine print and was very disturbed to read what rights I was giving away by choosing to go along with Medicare's choice of insurance for that year which was not UHC. Consequently, I opted to pay a monthly premium for privacy and felt it was worth every penny. Granted, let's face it, our privacy rights have been demolished overall but the difference between the two with who shared my information with outsiders was downright blatantly frightening, hence I opted to go with UHC. However, that may change this next year with the way things are heading but thus far I have been quite pleased. I remember the days when insurance covering preexisting conditions was quite costly. The fact that this has been significantly lower in comparison has been a God-send. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2015. UHC has been far better than Cigna, in my opinion, and more private.

When it comes to cost, formulary, and using it, the AARP MedicareRx/United Health Care plan is no better and no worse than Cigna - which I had before - or any other health insurance I had through work. What bothers me is how they terminated my coverage with the same notice they give my monthly statement along with any minor change, update, or "news" - a long e-mail with the subject "Jerod, a plan document is ready for you online" and absolutely no information in the e-mail itself. I'd have to log in, navigate the site, and read a .pdf document. They're as bad as the credit card companies with "important account information" letters containing balance transfer checks that I keep telling them not to send me. But it gets better. What to they do a week after they terminate my account? They still deduct my monthly premium. Yes, I know this can be viewed by anyone, including search engine spiders and spambots. I don't need to hide behind the cloak of anonymity in order to call out AARP MedicareRx/United Health Care on their incompetence and utter lack of caring.
